About this Work

An example of studio portraiture, this photograph shows some of the studio props—the hat, glasses, and belt—that Sidibé had available for sitters to wear. Signature features of West African photography from the 1960s and ‘70s, props allowed a sitter to project a modern identity that many Bamakois aspired to have but did not have the means to obtain. Sidibé worked with his sitters to construct poses that would highlight their clothing and accessories and convey the identities they desired.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
