About this Work

In 1902 Gabriele Münter enrolled in classes at the avant-garde Phalanx School in Munich and soon became the companion of the school’s director, Vassily Kandinsky. Between 1904 and 1908 the couple traveled throughout Europe. This small oil sketch was produced in 1906 when the artists resided in Sèvres, near Paris. Due in part to her exposure to French Impressionist and Fauve painting at this time, Münter began to develop an innovative technique and style based on spontaneity and abstraction. The loose brushwork, thick impasto, and bright colors of this small landscape foreshadow her later Expressionist work.
