About this Work

Daubigny painted Morning in the area around Barbizon, a village in the Fontainebleau forest, not far from Paris. Since the 1840s, Barbizon had hosted an artists’ colony; Daubigny was a regular visitor. The Barbizon artists advocated plein-air (outdoor) painting, and are generally considered the forerunners of the Impressionists. Daubigny’s rapid brushwork and depiction of light were indeed influential on this younger generation of artists, particularly on Claude Monet.
