About this Work

Modeled on late medieval depictions of the Apostles, the first disciples of Jesus, Saint Paul cuts a statuesque figure, standing as he clutches a large open book to his breast. He points toward its pages with one finger as if to emphasize the power of the Gospel even as he casts a glance away in the opposite direction. In 1514, Paul was on his way to becoming one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures for the emerging Reformation movement. Conversations about Paul among Dürer’s reform-minded peers may have directly inspired his decision to create this quiet engraving of the apostle.
