About this Work

This cup reminds us that ornamental design was an important aspect of Greek vessels. This type of design continued to be used with and, in this case, instead of narrative design. The intricate patterns used here are based loosely on natural floral forms—palm leaves and lotus buds—but they are highly stylized and mathematically organized.
