Notes:

[1] The Hopes purchased the painting from the Sales and Rental gallery at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, where it was consigned by Mrs. Horn (as noted in an undated letter from Henry R. Hope to Mrs. Norton Sosland of the Sales and Rental Gallery, Nelson-Atkins Museum; in registration files).

[2] Per correspondence as noted above. As of now, there is no further information available concerning Mrs. Horn. Mrs. Horn could have been one of Effie Seachrest’s many students who purchased a painting from her (see below).

[3] An art teacher and dealer, Seachrest played a significant role in garnering local interest in French art. She regularly acquired modern French paintings on consignment from dealers in New York and Paris, showing them at her Kansas City gallery informally known as the “Little Gallery in the Woods.” Many of these were purchased by the society women who were her core clientele. The Valentine Gallery sales ledger indicates that she had in this case bought the Derain painting from them in March 1929 (Inv. No. 164, Valentine Gallery ledger records, purchase verified by Julia May Boddewyn, in an email to the curator, January 51, 2017; copy in curatorial files).

[4] Recorded in the Valentine Gallery sales ledger under inv. no. 164, as above. The ledger also notes that the painting was jointly owned by the gallery’s owner F. Valentine Dudensing together with dealer Pierre Matisse, who worked as his agent in Paris.

[5] Per Michel Kellerman, André Derain: Catalogue raisonné de l’ɶuvre peint (Paris: Éditions Galerie Schmit, 1992–99), cat. no. 1217. Paul Guillaume (1891–1934), a collector and dealer in African and modern art, organized the first solo exhibition of Derain’s art at his gallery in 1923, and became the artist’s official dealer in 1923. The catalogue raisonné states that the painting dates to circa 1930, but it was likely with Guillaume by 1928 for some time before its acquisition by Valentine Gallery.
